American Black Walnut Flooring

American Black Walnut is a light-to-dark chocolate brown with a faint purple cast and darker streaks running through the heartwood, set against a creamy white sapwood that gives the floor its contrast. Occasionally it throws a curly figure.

It is tight-grained and polishes to a genuinely smooth finish, which is why it turns up in the most considered rooms. Softer than the Australian hardwoods at around 4.5 kN Janka, so it suits living and sleeping spaces better than a hallway that takes boots.

Your Questions. Answered.

The questions we hear most often at the showroom. Don’t see yours? Call (08) 9204 2611 or come visit us at 12 Burgay Court, Osborne Park.

Is American Black Walnut flooring suitable for kitchens and high-traffic areas?

Yes. American Black Walnut rates 4.5 kN on the Janka hardness scale, which is the number to look at for dents and traffic. It runs about 630-640kg/m³ dry density. No timber floor is dent-proof, but this one takes a busy kitchen. What matters more is that it can be re-coated when the finish is due, rather than replaced.

Do you install the flooring?

We don’t, and that’s deliberate. We supply the floor and match you with an installer through our Trade-Match service, chosen for your suburb, your subfloor and the format you’ve picked. You deal with the installer directly, and we stay involved on the product side for the life of the floor.

What grades of American Black Walnut do you stock?

We stock Select / Standard / Feature. Grade is about how much natural feature you want to see, not about quality – every grade is structurally sound. Select is the quietest, with small and few features. The higher grades carry more gum vein, more colour movement and more character. Come and see the boards side by side at Osborne Park.

Can American Black Walnut be laid over underfloor heating?

Talk to us before you specify it. Whether a floor suits a heated slab depends on the board thickness, the format and the system itself, and the answer differs by supplier. We’ll check the manufacturer’s position for your build rather than give you a general rule that might not hold.

How long does supply and installation take?

This floor is supplied unfinished, so allow for sanding and coating on site after it’s laid. That’s usually several days of curing on top of the installation itself. The upside is a seamless finish and a colour chosen to match the rest of your home.
